The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
THE ACT OF REMEMBRANCE, CHANGED
Every year we gather on the eleventh of the eleventh, to bow our heads. We look down. We pay our respects to the men and women across the Commonwealth who gave their lives in the two world wars. But 2020 is different. No crowds can gather at the Commonwealth War Grave Commissions cemeteries or monuments to pay their respects to the fallen.
That’s why we created #ShineOn. An inclusive, digital Remembrance initiative. An online experience that allows people to name a star in a virtual of the night sky after any of the 1.7m fallen commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Created in webGL with the stars plotted against an image of the galaxy taken by Nasa, each and every star generated in our virtual night sky is unique.
At 7pm on 11.11.20, we encouraged people to look up to the night sky to remember the fallen. In 4 key locations across the UK we beamed searchlights into the night sky to mark the occasion. Picked up and shared by broadcasters, press, influencers and celebrities, we created millions of earned impressions with our unique act of Remembrance.
